KTKT DJ Hall OF Fame

1963

The 1963 KTKT line up starts out as we left it in 1962. But during the spring things begin to change once again. Evening DJ Dave Nelson departs KTKT.  Ray Lindstrom is selected to take over the 6 – 9 pm program. This shift gives Ray the opportunity to do the incredibly popular Saturday top 40 debuting the new weekly KTKT “certified sound survey”. In a style duplicated in later years by Casey Kasem at a national level Ray counts down the top 40 tunes of Tucson starting at 1030 am every Saturday with the number 40 ranked song working up the chart one by one to the top record in Tucson. Due to the heavy spot load at KTKT the chart peak was never reached until just before 3 pm.

Soon after Nelson departs another major change occurs at KTKT when Guy Williams leaves Tucson going to Phoenix and KRIZ. Jerry Stowe takes over the morning drive - starting a four year run in that slot. Gordon Vann - previously at KSTT Davenport Iowa - joins KTKT to take over the noon to 3 pm show vacated by Jerry Stowe. Rounding out other 1963 changes Dick Rogers replaces Hi Garrett in the overnight spot. By summer of 1963 the KTKT DJ line up looks like this.

The next change to the KTKT DJ line up takes place during the late summer of 1963. Mike Hunter leaves KTKT joining Guy Williams at KRIZ in Phoenix. Tim Parker takes over the 9 am to noon program. To the delight of many evening listeners Lee Smith returns to KTKT going back to his old time slot of 9 pm to midnight. Tom Madison starts a four year relationship with KTKT by replacing Dick Rogers on the midnight to 6 am show. This line up takes KTKT through the rest of the year.
