KTKT DJ Hall OF Fame

1958

The morning DJ scramble at KTKT continues during early January with Dan Gates – who left KAIR after the original owners – a group headed by Dawkins Espy-sold that station late 1957 – coming on board temporarily for a few weeks to do the morning program until a more permanent solution is found. Dan Gates soon leaves KTKT to work with the former KAIR owners at a new station KIKK in Bakersfield California. By February things start to stabilize at KTKT with the addition of Chris Borden in the mornings. Chris had previously worked at both KTUC AM 1400 Tucson overnights and also at KAIR where he did DJ shifts and developed that stations original start up music library. Alan Carroll is now the new noon DJ allowing Buck Herring to return to doing news. Here is a listing from Monday February 10 1958.

During July a few more changes occur as Chris Borden and Frank Kalil both leave a short time due to training obligations with the Tucson Air National Guard. Bob Wolfe leaves KTKT moving over to country and western KMOP AM 1330 Tucson. Bob would go on to have a popular mid day program and eventually be appointed the KMOP program director. Bob tragically dies in an auto accident during the early sixties.  Bob Holiday then does a long morning program. Russ Jackson who had been doing news gets a DJ shift at midday. Buck Herring gets to fill the big man’s chair from 3 PM to sign off. By early September things return to normal at KTKT with the return of both Chris Borden and Frank Kalil to their old shifts. Here is a listing from September 4 1958 showing the current line up.

Late October finds more big changes at KTKT as Frank Kalil leaves to work for the Sherwood Gordon Broadcasting Group. Buck Herring takes over the 3 PM program, Alan Dean is added to the DJ line up at midday. More changes take place by the end of the year as Buck Herring leaves Tucson to take an opportunity at KDEO in San Diego. Johnny Hyde – previously at KNOG Nogales - comes on board to do the afternoon shift when Buck leaves. Here is the listing for Friday December 19. Owing to the short days in December KTKT used a three man shift.
